Artists & Audiophiles: take a look...

...then look again.

From: NoiseAddicts.com:

an artist names iri5 has definitely done something useful with his tapes.

Iri5 is an artist who specializes in using non traditional media such as old books, audio cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards, basically whatever he can find. He says:

It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own. Most everything I use has been thrown away or donated at some point. Past its prime, like some of the finest things in the world.

What he’s created with some old cassette tapes and reel tapes is simply remarkable. Using these old tapes, iri5 has turned them into works of art in a series that he calls “Ghost in the Machine.”  The series portrays celebrities and musicians such as Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Robert DiNero, Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, and Jim Morrison.

Be sure to follow the link to the article to see even more examples of the above as well as a link to even more of iri5's work. Aren't they something? I had a crate full of cassettes back in the 80s. Didn't we all? I find it fascinating that some people can take an ordinary cassette tape into a whole other realm of media.

I've long admired artistic and crafty people. There are a few things I can do well, and many things I do well enough, and only a very few that I am very good at. Thanks to those who nurture their talents & skills and who are able to hone them into something they choose to share with all of us.

Playing the percentages

I read a recent statistic that said 90% of all natural disasters involve flooding. 90%! After living most of my life to date in the southwest in desert/earthquake country that is a staggering number. Watching the news coverage out of still-wintry South Dakota and Canada the past few days has been absolutely riveting, especially the news from the Red River. Experts have called for historic water levels in some areas, nearly a dozen feet above towns that are already submerged.

I remember only a year back when areas along the northern Mississippi were severely affected by flooding and insurance companies were reporting a surge in people trying to get insurance quotes for their own properties. I pray that the worst-case scenario won't play out as badly as they're calling for and those affected will come through with the very worst things they've possibly lost being material.

...whether you like it or not.

The tactics put out by the President's "Organizing for America" sound a lot like what the unions are pushing for: they want to know who you are and where you stand. The better to browbeat you with.

Don't forget to read the fine print.

Question What
is the "Oath of Office" that is taken by the
Secretary of the Treasury and other
officials?

Answer The oath of office is taken by the by
all executive and judicial officers, as well as all Federal government
employees. It reads as follows:

I (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support
and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies,
foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to
the same; that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation
or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge
the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

Barney the Bouncer made it very clear at the end that he did NOT approve of the Congresswoman's line of questioning.

Update: Carpe diem, Congresswoman.

Wanted: a roomier hard drive

... er, no. Not a room-sized hard drive.

I'm starting to think that every time we have a baby our disk space needs go up by 100GB minimum. Between the photos, the videos, and even the audio of baby's firsts our hard drive is splitting at its digital seams. What's left is an overloaded computer that is so full it's impossible to find even our ordinary non-media files.

After spending a good hour trying to find some of my daughter's old schoolwork out of the tens of thousands of documents on our own drive (she couldn't remember the title) I decided it was time to invest in an external hard drive (maybe even two!). Not only would clearing out some of the 'clutter' speed things up, we could organize and store all of our media files off of the main hard drive which would not only make ALL of our files more accessible on both drives but give us a valuable backup solution as well!

The real legacy: it's for the children, right?

Crazy closet couture for cool kids!

With a happy house full of sprightly little girls it's become more & more challenging to give them all looks of their own when we usually depend on the 'hand-me-down' tradition that pervades large families. I've always been a fan of boutique lines and looks but infrequently can find a retailer that carries not only superb styles for kids, but competitive prices that won't kill our budget.

So you can imagine how excited when I was recently shopping for some new outfits to celebrate the arrival of spring & summer and found the most amazing source of cool baby clothes: R&S Avenue. If there was such a thing as "futureretro fashion" I would assume this was the look!

I absolutely loved the rompers and one-pieces - they're an always wear in our house for every season and with looks like this one, suitable for any occasion:

When I skimmed through the swimsuit section, I knew I'd be back in no time to treat our girls to some funky & fun looks for the beach this summer. They'll definitely stand out in these cutting edge suits! And with free shipping on orders over $50 I'll have more of our budgeted money to spend on the actual clothing itself!

Zany and definitely original, the clothing here will give any little girl (or boy!) a definite edge in style over their classmates. They even had a whole selection of classic rock-themed pieces... which might actually help get daddy excited about girls' clothes just once!

Governor Sarah Palin responds to the president's faux pas while cracking wise with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show.

(...Stay tuned for a special appearance by the president on 'Saturday Night Live' to drum up support for the next trillion dollar bailout plan...)

“I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics,” Governor Palin said. “This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.

“These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.”

Like a kid in a candy store...

Oh shoot, honey. I have to... shop??

I recently had to find a new bluetooth for my husband when a piece of his fell off, but I knew immediately where to shop first for the best Sale prices and brands. I had recently seen the tongue-in-cheek commercial starring Howie Mandel and knew that buy.com would definitely have what I needed. In only a little time I was able to find an even studier model at half the price we originally paid for the first headset, and with free shipping! And since I also needed a few other items (yes I really did!) in no time I had ended the afternoon with a very enjoyable and productive online shopping experience and spent

Rock n Roll (congress)Man

We've been watching "Red Eye" on Fox News in the middle of the night... sure we record it but sometimes I'm up with the baby watching it live. We've come to discover one of the most deadly sharp weapons in the conservative arsenal: Congressman Thaddeus G. McCotter, R-MI.

I'm amazed that someone who works for Congress not only belongs to a rock band but has a sense of humor on the level of Coulter/Miller complete with a depth of knowledge on rock culture and brass-laden one-liners to boot:

I can't decide if I'm thrilled he's on our side in Congress, or wondering why anyone with his obviously elevated IQ would want to waste away among the leftist bloodsuckers.

Bonus! From June 20, 2008: Congressman McCotter brings us "Speaking Democrat: A Primer":

Falling Dow(n)

Watching the DJI today made me remember why we're being so cautious with our finances. We're very fortunate that we didn't make a lot of the bad decisions plaguing a good number of people involved in the current credit mess. In addition, the fact that my husband is still working is a blessing in itself, especially with the newest addition to our family early this month. In particular we've seen that a sales career such as his is one of the more challenging jobs to not only find but to hold onto. We're trying to be careful and make certain we have backup plans in place should anything change.

Just living that old adage: never put all your eggs into one basket.

Mocking Marriage

Watching network television is about all I need to do anymore to see what the 'other side' thinks about people like me. People like me = married. Committed. Happy.

I don't even have to watch the actual shows to get the picture. Just the show previews tell you everything these days. And don't forget the ads! Mocking men & women, committed relationships and marriage in general is as much a selling point as sex is. And all the better if they combine the two into one ad or episode.

Some video ads:

American stupid dad.
International stupid dad.
The key to a Happy Marriage is slave labor and beer.
I could have been a happy bachelor.
Dad deals with the Diaper.
Husband opens mouth and inserts foot.
I don't even know what to say about this one.

In his piece last fall, How 25 Years of Gay Activism in Hollywood Has Paid Off, Robert Knight confirmed what many of us have suspected for a good long time:

Excerpts:

The new broadcast TV season includes 22 series featuring a total of 35 openly gay characters, according to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). GLAAD, which rides herd over all Hollywood scripts dealing with homosexuality, says the number of series with homosexual characters is a record. These series are on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and the CW networks. The total figure does not include shows on cable, like The L Word on Showtime, or MTV’s all-gay LOGO network.

A new Eye on Culture report from the Culture and Media Institute, “Lavender Propaganda,” reveals the depth and breadth of the current media campaign to promote homosexuality to average Americans. But Hollywood became a uniformly pro-gay industry well before Will & Grace or the slew of 2008-9 network shows.

In 1996, the year before Ellen DeGeneres “came out” as a lesbian on Ellen, Los Angeles magazine writer David Ehrenstein boasted in a May cover story, “More than Friends”:

“There are openly gay writers on almost every major prime-time situation comedy you can think of … In short, when it comes to sitcoms, gays rule.”

And L. Brent Bozell wrote an interesting article back in 2008 called TV's Contempt for Marriage that is still highly relevant and goes much further than my peevish annoyance at all things advertising:

The Parents Television Council studied the first month of prime-time programming during the fall 2007 season, and found that across the broadcast networks, verbal references to non-marital sex outnumbered references to sex within marriage by nearly three to one. Scenes depicting or implying sex between non-married partners outnumbered scenes depicting or implying sex between married partners by a ratio of nearly four to one.

Never mind the impact this warped worldview has on impressionable youngsters, so many of whom are hit with these messages early in the prime-time hours. Consider the effect on teenagers and young adults, the kind of demographic over which TV advertisers drool. In most cases, they are unmarried, but close to the age when marriage could happen. If they’re watching television, the prospects of a happy, healthy marriage with sexual fulfillment in it look horrendously dim. Consider a few examples:

– On ABC’s sitcom "Big Shots," a married man proclaims "I’m the only person in America having G-rated sex. And that was six months ago."

– On the ABC sitcom "Carpoolers," a married man laments "I haven’t seen my wife naked in two years." He adds, "When you’ve been married as long as I have, seeing your wife naked is having sex," and starts to cry.

– On ABC’s drama "Boston Legal," William Shatner’s character, a stereotypical dirty old man, proclaims "Here’s the thing about monogamy. It only works if you cheat."

– On the CBS smut-com "Two and a Half Men," a married woman describes married life as one long honeymoon. Another woman cracks, "That’s because she bangs a different groom every night."

Several programs featured plotlines with formerly married couples discovering a passionate sex life – but only after their marriages fizzled. They dread remarriage as a return to the frozen tundra. Obviously, TV writers can mine the existence of a sexless marriage, or a cheating spouse, or a dirty old lawyer. But when you put all the puzzle pieces together into a Big Picture, there’s a fraudulent message being sent: Marriage is a prescription for boredom and gloom.

Unless you have some assistance, that is. Back to the commercials for another common theme. We've all seen those ads for viagra and related products? Those people are married, happily it appears, but that's the only love life they have: one that is imperfect and requiring pharmaceutical intervention.

Watching television for one hour while considering the above is an eye-opener. One that might just make you stop watching altogether.

Homeschoolers! HSLDA offers FREE trial! Sign up now!

HSLDA, the non-profit Homeschool Legal Defense Association is opening their doors to new members by offering up a Free Trial Membership. HSLDA has long been a valuable resource & advocate for homeschooling families with a massive amount of information on their website which is accessible to all. Everything from homeschooling laws in the 50 United States to curriculum sources to regional homeschooling groups to legal news affecting homeschoolers is covered.

If you're not familiar with HSLDA, here is some info from their website:

About HSLDA

Home School Legal Defense Association is a nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. Through annual memberships, HSLDA is tens of thousands of families united in service together, providing a strong voice when and where needed.

HSLDA advocates on the legal front on behalf of our members in matters which include conflicts with state or local officials over homeschooling. Each year, thousands of member families receive legal consultation by letter and phone, hundreds more are represented through negotiations with local officials, and dozens are represented in court proceedings. HSLDA also takes the offensive, filing actions to protect members against government intrusion and to establish legal precedent. On occasion, HSLDA will handle precedent-setting cases for nonmembers, as well.

HSLDA advocates on Capitol Hill by tracking federal legislation that affects homeschooling and parental rights. HSLDA works to defeat or amend harmful bills, but also works proactively, introducing legislation to protect and preserve family freedoms.

HSLDA advocates in state legislatures, at the invitation of state homeschool organizations, by assisting individual states in drafting language to improve their homeschool legal environment and to fight harmful legislation.

HSLDA advocates in the media by presenting articulate and knowledgeable spokesmen to the press on the subject of homeschooling. HSLDA staff members are regularly called upon for radio, television, and print interviews, and their writings are frequently published in newspapers and magazines across the country. HSLDA’s own bimonthly magazine, The Home School Court Report, provides news and commentary on a host of current issues affecting homeschoolers. And its two-minute daily radio broadcast, Home School Heartbeat, can be heard on nearly 500 radio stations.

HSLDA advocates for the movement by commissioning and presenting quality research on the progress of homeschooling. Whether it’s in print, from the podium, or on the air, HSLDA provides insightful vision and leadership for the cause of homeschooling.

the Skinny on spring

First day of spring and I'm still so heavily into 'nesting' (even though the baby's already here) and cleaning out everyone's closets that I actually found myself pulling out the bikinis. Self-sabotage or hitting snooze on an alarm? In about a month I'll be able to get over to the Y to work out while the babies sleep and play with other babies, and the other little one gets to take some more swimming lessons. Between treadmills and weight loss supplements I might just make the beach in a sort-of bikini-approved body yet!

Stand-up guy? Not especially

Yeah, it says "2008" but the way things are going this year with the current administration's pronouncements maybe we'll keep this one around.

Do any of the pundits have a Gaffe counter yet? Like a Geiger counter, only different.

President Obama Jokes About Being a Bad Bowler: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.

Back during the campaign, I heard that the current president was so smart his IQ couldn't even be measured, it was just up there - way up - off the charts up there. I'm thinking that was an exaggeration.

Ex-pat envy?

Sometimes pictures capture your imagination... and keep your attention long after you've stopped viewing them. I've been surfing weblogs lately, reading about Americans who travel, work and even live abroad. It's probably from the current state of our country and not trusting those in charge over here, but it could also be from just really enjoying traveling. Argentina has long fascinated me: the culture, the history, the jungles & epic waterfalls, the beaches... it's an interesting daydream: to embark on a trip destined for the bottom of the world for some heavenly Argentina travel.

My husband's cousin lived in the country for a time and loved it. Me, I'd be delighted to just spend a long weekend in the land of the gauchos and tangos, to see that bridge above up close, and to sample some authentic empanadas. Yum!

...and mom & dad and grandma and grandpa too.

We've been dreading this since hearing 0bama talking on the campaign trail about compelling mandatory service from our children and through the school system up to and including college: "If you invest in America, we'll invest in you." Mandatory community service = college tuition?

Well, the House of Representatives went and passed the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education (GIVE) Act, 321 to 105.

Flashback: Obama Website Scrubs Mandatory Community Service Call :

Following a controversy over language that appeared on Barack Obama’s official website suggesting that Americans would be mandated to complete up to 100 hours of community service as part of a national service program, the original text has been memory-holed and replaced with a more sanitized version.

Despite numerous bloggers picking up on the switch, along with screenshots from before and after proving the language was changed, mesmerized Obama supporters are still claiming that that detractors had invented the language and that the website had not been altered.

The text from Obama’s change.gov website, which went online shortly after the election result, originally appeared as follows (emphasis mine).

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.

The text was changed at some point on Friday afternoon/evening to the following (emphasis mine).

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free.

See the two different versions in the following screenshots (click for enlargements).

On a separate area of the website, the program was also described under the heading “Require 100 hours of service in college,” but this has also since disappeared.

Is Obama’s plan for America really Rahm’s “The Plan”? Anything sound familiar? (Updated 3x).

Atlas Shrugs is also sounding the alarms on this.

My husband and I will have been married 10 years this June and I still get goosebumps when I look at him. The life we share with our children is one that I really didn't know was possible. Sure, we all see people who've been married a long time... i.e. longer than a year or two. My own paternal grandparents are still happily married and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary!

But oftentimes you don't see the depth of love and commitment on the surface that exists for a marriage to have survived as long as it has. Friends of mine seems to struggle from time to time: keeping that spark alive. When they ask my advice, I say the same thing: have fun and ENJOY each other. Try something new: date night (even if it's just to grab a couple milkshakes at the drive-through if you can get someone to watch the kids for 30 mins), a random love letter tucked under a pillow, the offer of a backrub out of the blue, a spontaneous dance in the middle of the kitchen while the pasta water boils over, maybe even surprise him or her with some sexy babydolls...

Above all: You have to laugh. I'm no expert but I know this: Too much tension, whether it's from work, kids, finances, health can suck all the joy of out you and by extension - your relationships with those around you

I couldn't resist.

I saw this NYT article Whoopie! Cookie, Pie or Cake, It's Having Its Moment and decided to look into making the treats for the kids this weekend to celebrate the long-anticipiated arrival of spring. A near-6 months of being 'cabin bound' can do strange things to all of us, so I'm looking forward to all of us being able to enjoy being out and about again.

Whoopie pies were something I had as a kid in multiple variations: chocolate, banana, lemon... But reading about the origins of this Amish delight had me wanting to try out a traditional recipe. If you'd like to try it too, here it is, courtesy of AmishRecipes.net

Amish Whoopie Pies Recipe

No Way Out?

Watching the AIG bailout/bonus news lately, I wonder if Secretary Tim "Turbo Tax" Geithner is feeling less protected than he was when the nation found out he was just one on a list of many tax cheats the 0bama administration wanted to install. Now he's finding himself at odds with his own administration:

Tim Geithner is now completely on the defensive. In a long letter to Nancy Pelosi, he explained how and why he approved the AIG bonuses (troubling) and described a plan to "recoup" them. The letter will not likely stop the growing chorus of criticism that may well drive Geithner out of office.

Sooner or later he's going to find himself on the outs completely with his good pal 0bama and looking for the emergency lights that will guide him to the quickest exit out of town.

Unfortunately, this one's from Zero, not Papa:

Obama secretly ends program that let pilots carry guns

After the September 11 attacks, commercial airline pilots were allowed to carry guns if they completed a federal-safety program. No longer would unarmed pilots be defenseless as remorseless hijackers seized control of aircraft and rammed them into buildings.

Now President Obama is quietly ending the federal firearms program, risking public safety on airlines in the name of an anti-gun ideology.

The Obama administration this past week diverted some $2 million from the pilot training program to hire more supervisory staff, who will engage in field inspections of pilots.

This looks like completely unnecessary harassment of the pilots. The 12,000 Federal Flight Deck Officers, the pilots who have been approved to carry guns, are reported to have the best behavior of any federal law enforcement agency. There are no cases where any of them has improperly brandished or used a gun. There are just a few cases where officers have improperly used their IDs.

Fewer than one percent of the officers have any administrative actions brought against them and, we are told, virtually all of those cases “are trumped up.”

Take a case against one flight officer who had visited the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles within the last few weeks. While there, the pilot noticed that federal law enforcement officers can, with the approval of a superior, obtain a license plate that cannot be traced, a key safety feature for law enforcement personnel. So the pilot asked if, as a member of the federal program, he was eligible. The DMV staffer checked and said “no.” The next day administrative actions were brought against the pilot for “misrepresenting himself.” These are the kinds of cases that President Obama wants to investigate.

Since Mr. Obama's election, pilots have told us that the approval process for letting pilots carry guns on planes slowed significantly. Last week the problem went from bad to worse. Federal Flight Deck Officers - the pilots who have been approved to carry guns - indicate that the approval process has stalled out.

Pilots cannot openly speak about the changing policies for fear of retaliation from the Transportation Security Administration. Pilots who act in any way that causes a “loss of confidence” in the armed pilot program risk criminal prosecution as well as their removal from the program. Despite these threats, pilots in the Federal Flight Deck Officers program have raised real concerns in multiple interviews.

I wonder if NRO's Dave Kopel could envision the current administration's policies and people as being more in line with Harry Potter's enemy Death Eaters than the Bush administration's when he wrote about problems with an administration not following the will of the people back in 2003.

NRA is on it. This should not go unchallenged.

Bulking up for your future

With the threat of inflation looming ever-larger as the recession appears to hover on the edge of a cliff, many people are looking for new and better ways to buy items to not only use but sell. Home-based businesses are always a big draw as people find themselves on the wrong side of layoffs as well. I recently read that interest and investment in wholesale purchasing has gone up due to both start-up small businesses and also people finding ways to buy what they need at a lower price. Being previous small business owners, we always found wholesale purchasing an excellently efficient way of not only increasing our inventory at a lower cost but furnishing our home office with necessary equipment at a lesser expense as well.

Plus the variety of items you can buy in bulk at rock-bottom prices is practically limitless. Everything from electronics to home needs to jewelry and clothing to toys and tools can be had for pennies on the dollar... talk about an investment in your future!

Our ever-expanding family

Now that we have a new little bundle of love, our other girls are on their own baby bandwagon: for a kitten. The oldest is working on names and has it down to a specific breed (ragdoll?). The first grader just something to cuddle. Babies are cute but fuzzy furry animal babies interest kids more. It's been awhile since we had a 4-legged pet so I've been researching the kinds and cost of items a pet would require.

I was impressed at the large selection of pet supplements that can be purchased now. After all, dogs and cats are such a big part of families these days! My own parents' dogs take supplements for their health and I know they help them tremendously. It's a little peace of mind that not only can I take my own daily vitamins as needed, but we can care for our pets' healths too.

Get involved: The 9-12 Project

The Nine Principles

1. America is good.

2. I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life.

3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday.

4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government.

5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.

6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results.

7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.

8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion.

9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.

The 12 values Glenn Beck is telling Americans they must embrace are:

  • Honesty

  • Reverence

  • Hope

  • Thrift

  • Humility

  • Charity

  • Sincerity

  • Moderation

  • Hard Work

  • Courage

  • Personal Responsibility

  • Gratitude

or should I say 'Stimuli'? I lost count somewhere around 1.5 trillion.

Part 1 of what I expect to be an ongoing discussion:
Sometimes you just feel like a snowman in Death Valley.

My ever-vigilant FRiends at the Free Republic have been discussing a proposed bill that's sure to alarm a few of you thinkers out there: HR 875 - The Federal Take-Over of Food Regulation and HR 875 The food police, criminalizing organic farming and the backyard gardener, and violation of the 10th amendment:

From Campaign for Liberty:

DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, READ THIS LEGISLATION FOR YOURSELF.  The more people who read this legislation the more insight we are going to get and be able to share.  Post your observations and insights below.  Urge your members to read this legislation and to oppose the passage of this legislation.

Pay special attention to

  • Section 3 which is the definitions portion of the bill-read in it's entirety.

  • section 103, 206 and 207- read in it's entirety.

Red flags I found and I am sure there are more...........

  • Legally binds state agriculture depts to enforcing federal guidelines effectively taking away the states power to do anything other than being food police for the federal dept.

  • Effectively criminalizes organic farming but doesn't actually use the word organic.

  • Effects anyone growing food even if they are not selling it but consuming it.

  • Effects anyone producing meat of any kind including wild game.

  • Legislation is so broad based that every aspect of growing or producing food can be made illegal.  There are no specifics which is bizarre considering how long the legislation is.

  • Section 103 is almost entirely about the administrative aspect of the legislation.  It will allow the appointing of officials from the factory farming corporations and lobbyists and classify them as experts and allow them to determine and interpret the legislation.  Who do you think they are going to side with?

  • Section 206 defines what will be considered a food production facility and what will be enforced up all food production facilities.  The wording is so broad based that a backyard gardener could be fined and more.

  • Section 207 requires that the state's agriculture dept act as the food police and enforce the federal requirements.  This takes away the states power and is in violation of the 10th amendment.

  • There are many more but by the time I got this far in the legislation I was so alarmed that I wanted to bring someone's attention to it. (to the one person who reads my blog)

the Gaza Guilt Game

From Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs comes this interesting tidbit: PRAY FOR THE JIHAD:

Prayforgaza

Americans are being besieged with Islamic propaganda on bus ads and billboards in their relentless  multi-pronged strategy to impose their Islam on us.

Atlas reader Henry noticed a few weeks back
that these billboards (above) were going up
around Houston highways, and he was intrigued, so he visited the website. It is
clearly an anti-Israel pro-palestinian site in terms of content. So he emailed
them asking how he could be sure the money wouldn't go to terrorism. Here's the
answer he received.

Prayer for Gaza? I don't think they mean these kids.

Dear Henry,

Thank you for your e-mail and for your prayer.
We are all American citizens who believe in the justice for the Palestinians as well as peace for both Palestinians and Israelis. Our message is clearly a message of peace,
so how can your donations end up being used for terrorism?

Pray for Gaza

That's how stupid they think people are.

My question is this: $900 million U.S Taxpayer dollars aren't enough?

And when are those taxpayer-funded terrorists going to release kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, anyway?

I'll continue to pray for Gilad, not Gaza's continued jihad.

Please welcome...

Daughter #4 - she's 9 lbs of pure baby bliss.

Thank you to all who sent such warm wishes!

Monday's Schedule: Blizzard and a baby

It's winter #3 since we left California for the northeast and to date I think the most snow we've seen here is 4 inches total. Of course I hear lots of stories of what they used to get in the winter: blizzards, snow drifts as high as the roof of a car, snow days for a week, snow families... including snow dogs in snow dog houses. You get the idea.

Instead of some of that wondrous snow of our own we've been inundated with frequent... and damaging... ice storms that, according to longtime residents, are not frequently seen in these parts. Suffice to say it's been a bummer for us Golden State transplants who wouldn't mind seeing some of that Christmas-greeting card type snow for ourselves.

I will say that the aftermath of an ice storm, when the sun is shining brightly, does lend it self to beauty when you're looking across a crystalline woods feeling as if you're on the edge of some lost land of Shannara.

So after all my kvetching about how we never get any snow only sleet... tomorrow we're finally expecting some snow in our area! I first saw the forecast and it was 6-9 inches. Eh, we've seen that before... and I think that time we got the 4 inches I mentioned above. This time however, we have a 100% chance of snow AND the precipitation prediction has gone UP not down: up to 8 to 14 inches.

Fabulous right? Snow day for the kids! They finally they get to see what it's really like to play in and cavort around in.

EXCEPT:

While this amazing snowstorm is predicted to be falling all over us, we'll be at the hospital giving birth.

Amazing timing I tell you. The ONE day it actually drops some real snow on us... is the day that our newest baby will be arriving.

Well I am putting on my rose-colored glasses and counting our continued blessings: we live very close to the hospital. We have a 4 wheel drive. We're stocked & ready for the storm in the way of sustenance for us all. I even remembered to buy newborn diapers. And I'll hopefully be bringing our newest baby home to her very first winter wonderland! Yep. It's the little things that really make life amazing.

Okay so I know it's not going to be a blizzard. But it will sure feel like one.

Anyway, I'll be away for a few days. Best to you all.

(How long is a virtual maternity leave anyway?)
