"When was the last time anyone ever asked you for $700 billion?'' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) asked the House near the close of debate Monday.

"It's a staggering figure.... $700 billion, a staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country,'' Pelosi said, blaming Bush for inheriting a budget surplus and turning it into a record deficit with "reckless economic policies.... "It's really an anything goes mentality, no regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute, and the government will bail you out,'' Pelosi said. "Those days are over. The party is over.''

President Bush, the favored punching bag of Democrats everywhere, isn't running for anything and is 3 months away from going back to private life. Who else can they blame? I have some ideas... courtesy of the New York Times, circa 2006.

And the Freddie/Fannie fans...

What about the Republicans? Surely they have some blame in this, right?

What say you, Speaker Pelosi?

Baby Cravings: the healthy kind

Holy Hola Fruta!

I've been craving these amazing & delicious all-natural fruit sherberts for days now. If you can get your hands on them either at your market or convenience store and love fruit, they're a must-taste.

When we first saw these at the grocery I was a goner because I love anything pineapple coconut. So of course their scrumptious Piña Colada is my favorite variety, with Peach running a close second. These amazing treats are like the godiva of sherbert! One of these days I'll find the Margarita flavor & if their previous products tell me anything, it's sure to be another winner. Mmm maybe I'll try another flavor... like mango tonight! Whichever it is, I have to buy several because the whole family devours them in no time. Darn!

Bailout blues...

Well, more like white-hot rage around the blogosphere, but there you are.

With the "must-pass this plan or we're all going to die!!" bailout deal comes this latest news courtesy of Lindsey Graham, from Greta Van Susteren's show "On the Record" last night: "And this deal that’s on the table now is not a very good deal. Twenty percent of the money that should go to retire debt that will be created to solve this problem winds up in a housing organization called ACORN that is an absolute ill-run enterprise, and I can’t believe we would take money away from debt retirement to put it in a housing program that doesn’t work."

ACORN??

ACORN VOTE FRAUD MAP:

ACORN Suspected of Voter Fraud

AR 1998
A contractor with ACORN-affiliated Project Vote was arrested for falsifying about 400 voter registration cards.

CO 2004
An ACORN employee admitted to forging signatures and registering three of her friends to vote 40 times.

2005 Two ex-ACORN employees were convicted in Denver of perjury for submitting false voter registrations.

FL 2004
A Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesman said ACORN was “singled out” among suspected voter registration groups for a 2004 wage initiative because it was “the common thread” in the agency’s fraud investigations.

MI 2004
The Detroit Free Press reported that “overzealous or unscrupulous campaign workers in several Michigan counties are under investigation for voter-registration fraud, suspected of attempting to register nonexistent people or forging applications for already-registered voters.” ACORN-affiliate Project Vote was one of two groups suspected of turning in the documents.

MO 2007
Four ACORN employees were indicted in Kansas City for charges including identity theft and filing false registrations during the 2006 election.

2006 Eight ACORN employees in St. Louis were indicted on federal election fraud charges. Each of the eight faces up to five years in prison for forging signatures and submitting false information.

2003 Of 5,379 voter registration cards ACORN submitted in St. Louis, only 2,013 of those appeared to be valid. At least 1,000 are believed to be attempts to register voters illegally.

NC 2004
North Carolina officials investigated ACORN for submitting fake voter registration cards.

NM 2005
Four ACORN employees submitted as many as 3,000 potentially fraudulent signatures on the group’s Albuquerque ballot initiative. A local sheriff added: “It’s safe to say the forgery was widespread.”

2004 An ACORN employee registered a 13-year-old boy to vote. Citing this and other examples, New Mexico State Representative Joe Thompson stated that ACORN was “manufacturing voters” throughout New Mexico.

OH 2007
A man in Reynoldsburg was indicted on two felony counts of illegal voting and false registration, after being registered by ACORN to vote in two separate counties.

2004 A grand jury indicted a Columbus ACORN worker for submitting a false signature and false voter registration form. In Franklin County, two ACORN workers submitted what the director of the board of election supervisors called “blatantly false” forms. In Cuyahoga County, ACORN and its affiliate Project Vote submitted registration cards that had the highest rate of errors for any voter registration group.

MN 2004
During a traffic stop, police found more than 300 voter registration cards in the trunk of a former ACORN employee, who had violated a legal requirements that registration cards be submitted to the Secretary of State within 10 days of being filled out and signed.

PA 2008
An ACORN employee in West Reading, PA, was sentenced to up to 23 months in prison for identity theft and tampering with records. A second ACORN worker pleaded not guilty to the same charges and is free on $10,000 bail.

2004 Reading’s Director of Elections received calls from numerous individuals complaining that ACORN employees deliberately put inaccurate information on their voter registration forms. The Berks County director of elections said voter fraud was “absolutely out of hand,” and added: “Not only do we have unintentional duplication of voter registration but we have blatant duplicate voter registrations.” The Berks County deputy director of elections added that ACORN was under investigation by the Department of Justice.

TX 2004
ACORN turned in the voter registration form of David Young, who told reporters “The signature is not my signature. It’s not even close.” His social security number and date of birth were also incorrect.

VA 2005
In 2005, the Virginia State Board of Elections admonished Project Vote and ACORN for turning in a significant number of faulty voter registrations. An audit revealed that 83% of sampled registrations that were rejected for carrying false or questionable information were submitted by Project Vote. Many of these registrations carried social security numbers that exist for other people, listed non-existent or commercial addresses, or were for convicted felons in violation of state and federal election law.

In a letter to ACORN, the State Board of Elections reported that 56% of the voter registration applications ACORN turned in were ineligible. Further, a full 35% were not submitted in a timely manner, as required by law. The State Board of Elections also commented on what appeared to be evidence of intentional voter fraud. "Additionally,” they wrote, “information appears to have been altered on some applications where information given by the applicant in one color ink has been scratched through and re-entered in another color ink. Any alteration of a voter registration application is a Class 5 Felony in accordance with § 24.2-1009 of the Code of Virginia."

WA 2007
Three ACORN employees pleaded guilty, and four more were charged, in the worst case of voter registration fraud in Washington state history. More than 2,000 fraudulent voter registration cards were submitted by the group during a voter registration drive.

WI 2004
The district attorney’s office investigated seven voter registration applications Project Vote employees filed in the names of people who said the group never contacted them. Former Project Vote employee Robert Marquise Blakely told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he had not met with any of the people whose voter registration applications he signed, “an apparent violation of state law,” according to the paper.

So, for those keeping score. ACORN has been investigated for vote fraud in Ohio, Wisconsin, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Michigan, Washington (largest case of voter fraud ever and the backlash may even install a Republican governor this go-round), Virginia, Louisiana, New Mexico and Colorado (do those look like battleground states? surely a coincidence...).

But, yeah, there's no pattern or anything. Just some misguided miscreants.

NYT: 6 Food Mistakes Parents Make

From the New York Times' parenting section (does this make you as apprehensive as it does me?)... comes 6 Food Mistakes Parents Make . I'm forever reading these "Common Mistakes ____ Make"-themed articles often even though they don't really have anything to do with my situation. This one caught my eye though, because what parent doesn't have at least one child (even if it's an only child) who hasn't caused at least one well-planned meal to go awry because they refused to eat any or all of it?

I read the article and confess.. of the 6 'mistakes' they list I am guilty of 3: Sending Children Out of the Kitchen, Pressuring Them to Take a Bite, and Keeping 'Good Stuff' Out of Reach.

Okay, the first one, is not as cut & dry as it seems. My 1st grader loves to help me cook, helps frequently and we occasionally make something just the two of us. However, she also loves to do cartwheels, practice jump rope and play basketball in the kitchen all while I have pots bubbling on various burners and am basting a roast in an open oven. I think I'm good on that one.

The second I don't see as a mistake. I wouldn't call it pressure so much as encouragement: "Try it you might like it!" They all have their likes & dislikes, but making yummy-smelling & yummy-looking food is the best encouragement I've found.

The third: I couldn't keep the 'good stuff' out of reach if I wanted to, though I do try. I also hide the especially good stuff in cubbies outside the kitchen when needed. My kids are climbers and will utilize anything they can find to locate and devour any treats they suspect are in the kitchen. I have a terrible sweet tooth so am prone to bringing home the sweet snacks for everyone.

Overall, I think we're okay in the food department. My kids are generally active and happy/ healthy eaters. Yep they like junk food in most every shape & size. They also try & eat almost every food I put in front of them, so I think we'll be okay.

I thought I was the only one with an extended summer vacation thanks to this ongoing school strike. First the Freddie/Fannie/AIG bailouts and then vox populi's insistence that the entire economy as a whole is sliding into the abyss... now comes the latest from the Democratic-controlled congress:
Democratic Congress May Adjourn, Leave Crisis to Fed, Treasury

Excerpt: 'Lawmakers say they are unlikely to take action before, or to delay, their planned adjournments -- Sept. 26 for the House of Representatives, a week later for the Senate. While they haven't ruled out returning after the Nov. 4 elections, they would rather wait until next year unless Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, who are leading efforts to contain the crisis, call for help.'

Here's a riveting & confidence-inspiring quote: One reason, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday, is that ``no one knows what to do'' at the moment.

Brings me back to Dennis Miller's analysis of the senator:

This 221st Constitution Day...

... take a few minutes. Reward your mind. And give that wondrous document surely written by men but inspired by a Higher Power a fresh look. Even if you only make it through the Preamble...

and then, please spend a few minutes with one of the most influential and eloquent speakers on the Constitution, politics and conservatism our country will ever know. This is from a debate Mr Buckley had with Ronald Reagan in 1978 on the matter of the Panama Canal treaties.

God Bless America.

Polaroid.. in the House!

Goodbye iconic friend. Never replicated, your time came too soon.

Neat new gadgets

Sometimes you see the coolest products, and you think "that is amazing!"... "I need one!"... and.. "why didn't anyone invent that sooner?"

The cupcake courier is one of those products. I saw it in a recent issue of one of the latest pregnancy magazine at my OBGYN's office & it's still on my mind... such a great idea. Plus it comes in 4 colors and is just so darn cute!

I usually try to avoid one-use products in the kitchen, but I can see other uses for this... with and without the trays!

Reliving and Remembering... by Rummy

9/11/08: Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld speaks at the dedication of the Pentagon Memorial for the victims of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, Madam Speaker, Chief Justice, Mr. Secretary, Mr. Chairman;

Members of the families of those we are here to honor;

Jim Laychak, Joyce and I are so grateful for your leadership. And we thank all of those who have done so much to help establish this important memorial;

Dick Myers, it is good to see you.

Men and women of the Pentagon -- military and civilian -- what a high honor it is to be with you again. We went through a great deal since September 11th, and I will always treasure our time together.

This morning we gather to dedicate this ground, where a great building became a battlefield, where stone became dust, steel became shrapnel; and where flame, smoke and destruction stole the lives of 184 men, women and children.

This memorial tells the story of their last, terrible moments on this Earth -- moments when families were destroyed, when a symbol of America’s strength was scarred, and when our country became, in the words of an American poet, “acquainted with the night.”

Today we renew our vows to never forget how this long struggle began, and to never forget those who fell first.

Remembered and honored are fellow workers, friends, and family members. They were men and women at their desks in the Pentagon, who one morning kissed their loved ones goodbye, went off to work and never came home. And they were the passengers and the crew aboard Flight 77, who in their last moments made phone calls to loved ones, and prayed to the Almighty, before their journey ended such a short distance from where it began.

Each with different backgrounds and different dreams, it was here that their fates were cruelly merged forever. In the flag that flies above this memorial, we will be reminded of what they had in common. They fell, side by side, as Americans. And make no mistake, it was because they were Americans that they were killed here in this place.

Those of us who were in the Pentagon on September 11th share -- and we will always share -- a very special bond with each member of their families and with each other. We will not forget the way this huge building shook. We will not forget our colleagues and friends who were taken from us and from their families. And we will not forget what that deadly attack has meant for our country.

In the sinister logic of its perpetrators, and in the suffering of its victims, September 11th was among the darkest of days for Americans. But it was also the day that America can be said to have rediscovered its special grace -- the American people’s capacity for courage, for goodwill and for sacrifice.

Here, beneath the sloping fields of Arlington National Cemetery -- fields that hold our nation’s fallen -- this building stands as a silent monument to the resolve of a free people. And so too this memorial in its shadow will stand not only as a symbol of a nation’s grief, but as an eternal reminder of men and women of valor who saw flame and smoke and stepped forward to save and protect the lives of their fellow Americans on September 11th.

Let it also remind us of each of those who have volunteered to serve in our nation’s armed forces, before and every day since. Our nation’s military has stood guard in this new age of peril, determined that what happened here, seven years ago, must not happen again.

We have been “acquainted with the night.” We have taken its measure. In the darkest of times, we have stood together. In defiance, our nation has pressed on toward morning. With resolve renewed, and with the certain strength of the American people, our nation will force the dawn.

My constant prayer is that God will bless the families of those we remember this day. And that the good Lord will bless all of those who have lost loved ones in the long struggle that has followed. We are deeply in their debt. And each of us will remain so for the rest of our lives.

Limbo...

So much is going on, it's a rollercoaster around here! Are we moving to CA? or staying in PA? is OR really off the table? No matter what, I'm going to LOVE that cross-country drive. I didn't have my digital camera last time!

Big important people love my husband's videos! How awesome to tell him how talented he is, and have him finally believe it because it isn't just me saying it.

Football is back and SOOO fun to watch! I can already smell the barbequed burgers, ribs, chicken, dogs, brats.. MMM!

And.. when is school going to start and the strike going to end for the teen? When are the 1st graders school materials going to arrive? Will the baby be a boy or a girl?

Should I get a haircut? Am I nesting already? The toddler might be teething again. Life is so exciting!

I need a tan.

Must See Video

Posted as a Proud Wife.. and a Patriot. I don't really have a lot to add except: it was the feature of a Jack Cashill article!

Day of rest

Today would have been a marvelous day for a picnic in the park. I need to find myself a picnic basket! Do they make them anymore? Wicker, lined with red/white or blue/white gingham cloth, 2 handles and a top that opens on both sides?

Or was that in "Alice in Wonderland"?

Football was a blast today!... though a season-ending injury capped the other games. Even when you can't stand the team it happens to, noone likes to see that in the game.

Tilapia on the menu... how to disguise it so the kids will eat it?

Hanna-tized

The big girl blew around us with monsoon-like rain and scared the daylights out of my 1st grader with the "T" word (think Dorothy), but thankfully, didn't drop any more trees. Prayers to those who were less fortunate than us. I have been reading Ike is a monster... from the projected path.. the Big Easy may be target one again?

The annual Grand Prix bike race zoomed down our street...very exciting, not just for the kids. They look very pleased to see fans braving the pouring ran for just a glimpse of them as they zip by. With their rather extensive caravans!

Batteries not included

TS Hanna is on the way up here ... as a nor'easter, they're saying. I have yet to get used to that term. Regardless, when there is an actual storm here... we lose power, phone, etc, so we have to stock up on batteries, food and water as though we were expecting to hibernate. Now we just have to find the flashlights so we can count how many "D" batteries we need. I bet they're all under the 1st grader's bed. Again.

School bored

So my local school district.. that wonderful, unbeatable amazing school district that I moved into... went on strike the very first day of school.

"What do they want", I wondered? Depending on who you talk to.. "they" is either the union or the majority of teachers. They work 7.5 hrs a day on a block schedule, summers and Christmas and Easter and even Thanksgiving vacations. Average salary here is $89, 900 a year. They even get to move into a brand-new $11o+ million dollar school next year. Not bad, right?

Their demands: 9.5% raise per year over the next 5 years. Yes you read that right, they want approximately (using our average here) an extra $40,000ish added to their salaries! They want to work LESS hours a day (other schools around here apparently work 8 hrs?), and lower medical co-pays. What it will cost? Homeowners a LOT.

Wait until all the parents (and their kids) find out the real deal. Those teachers don't go back to school in 3 weeks, and the students (therefore their parents & families) are going to lose ALL their vacations this school year. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, they'll even go into summer until they have enough of their mandated days to graduate the kids from their respective grades. They won't have to attend the actual DAY of the holiday, just all the days around them.

No child left behind?

Exciting times

Historical happenings abound this election cycle. A patriot like me wouldn't live during any other time!
